Does the Bambu Lab P1S need a hardened nozzle?

For ordinary non-abrasive filament, not automatically. For carbon- or glass-fiber reinforced filament, Bambu Lab says the stock P1S should be upgraded before direct printing. The nozzle is only one part of that wear path.

Short answerFor CF/GF composites, plan a hotend and extruder upgrade—not just a nozzle swap.

The P1S quick-start specification lists a stainless steel nozzle and steel extruder gears. It calls PA and PC capable, but labels carbon- and glass-fiber reinforced polymers “not recommended.” Bambu's P1 guidance says reinforced filament should not be printed directly before upgrading both the extruder and hotend.

The distinction that matters

Hardened 0.4 mm supported

Bambu's hotend guidance says its own PLA-CF and PETG-CF can use a 0.4 mm hardened-steel nozzle.

Abrasive + clog risk

Third-party CF / GF

Hardened 0.6 mm highly recommended

Bambu recommends the larger hardened nozzle for many third-party fiber-filled filaments to reduce abrasion and clogging risk.

Do not transfer the unfilled PA/PC claim to PA-CF or PC-CF. The filler changes wear and flow behavior even when the base polymer name looks familiar.

Before ordering parts

Run the decision in this order

    Read the exact filament data sheet.

    Confirm whether the filament is actually fiber-filled, its recommended nozzle material and diameter, drying cycle, and printing temperatures.

  2. 02
    Separate wear resistance from clog resistance.

    Hardened steel addresses abrasion. A larger orifice may reduce fiber-related clogging, but the maker's stated diameter still wins.

  3. 03
    Upgrade the complete abrasive path.

    For the P1S, follow Bambu's hotend and extruder guidance rather than assuming one replaceable component makes the system reinforced-material ready.

  4. 04
    Check everything beyond wear.

    Nozzle and bed temperatures, drying, chamber conditions, ventilation, build surface, and part geometry can still make the pairing unsuitable.
